    In the introductory chapter three models of rural development were developed on the basis of the extent of intervention from the state in to the rural periphery and of the selection of the primary goals sought to be achieved.It was also indicated that the effect of policy models adopted by a government were mediated besides other factors by its capacity to mobilize the rural community in the direction of the intended policy goals as well as by the characteristics of the rural community which were the object of change.

    Role of peasant organisations in rural development

    The last quarter century has witnessed a growing acceptance of rural development by the developing countries of Asia as a major critical element in their national development process. Many factors have contributed to this.the dominance of the rural areas in the spatial distribution of population and their importance from the point of location of exploitable natural resources are but two of these factors.
