Female migrants play a significant role in boosting the foreign reserves of the country through their remittances. It has been a matter of great concern that in spite of this, the violation of human rights, exploitation and abuse and hard hardships faced by these women continues unabated. Such experiences are felt both in their home country, during the pre and post migration stages, and in the host country where domestic labour does not come within the ambit of labour laws of the country. It is in this scenario that the Human Rights Commission set up a Committee in 2005 to review procedures for the protection of women migrant workers, providing the necessary terms of reference for the committee to work on. A report was presented by the Committee, incorporating input by group of stakeholders, and several recommendations. |
