Abstract
This paper explores the development options available to Sri Lanka in the 1980s within the context of the country's physical and social constraints. It approaches this task from three perspective first it reviews the country's economic and social performance during the 1960s and 1970s up to 1977.Secondly it analyses the country's development prospects under the strategy introduced y the government that entered office in 1977. And thirdly it considers the feasibility and strategic requirements of the country's pursuit of the targets set forth in the recent United Nations study on the future of the world economic
