Abstract
The gradual rise of food prices that started in the early part of this decade was a result of a systematically developing mismatch between the world's demand and supply of food. The present crisis is only an exacerbation caused by other developments such as the diversion of limited resources for bio-fuel production, speculative buying of grain stocks, rising prices of fuel and inputs such as fertilizer. The background for the current situation has been in the making for decades.
